چکیده

Abstract Purpose Common octopus is the fishing species with highest economic revenue in Portugal, and its consumption per capita very high. The majority of catches come from small-scale fleet pots traps. aims were to assess main environmental impacts common octopus’ fishery traps Algarve region, where most important size landings volume occurs, find if there are significant differences between both gears. Methods assessment includes standard LCA impact categories, fishery-specific quantification macroplastics microplastics emitted environment. functional unit selected was 1 kg study a ‘cradle gate’ system. scope included operations until product landed at harbour. Primary data obtained by face-to-face questionnaires 22 vessels, an average 1005 1211 vessel, 372 234 lost annually Plastic have concrete block metal framed covered plastic netting. Each trap or pot connected line regular intervals. Unlike traps, do not need bait. Results discussion Fuel contribution global warming high potential exists lower down carbon footprint. fuel use intensity resulted 0.9 L/kg octopus. bait used raises further costs related consumption. represents more than two times found for all categories studied except ecotoxicity categories. Zinc contributor but it has been other studies. It estimated that 12.2 g plastics environment loss gears contributor. Conclusions footprint 3.1 CO 2 eq octopus, being compared seafood products, less half caught trawling. Pots highly selective gears, causing negligible disturbance seafloor. stock assessed, management measures exist can be improved. A drawback

Stock Assessment of the Common Octopus (Octopus vulgaris) in Monastir; the Mid-eastern Coast of Tunisia

The common octopus, (Octopus vulgaris Cuvier, 1797) is widely distributed through the world. It represents an important resource with high economic value. It is exploited by trawl and by other gears such as trammel net, pots and it is also captured by diving. Although the multitude of assessment techniques, few fisheries cephalopods were well managed. In Tunisia, common octopus (Octopus vulgari...

Infiltrated plaques resulting from an injury caused by the common octopus (Octopus vulgaris): a case report

Several species of octopus are considered venomous due to toxins present in the glands connected to their “beak”, which may be associated with hunt and kill of prey. Herein, we report an accident involving a common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) that injured an instructor during a practical biology lesson and provoked an inflamed infiltrated plaque on the hand of the victim. The lesion was present ...

Characterization of the skin mucus in the common octopus Octopus vulgaris (Cuvier) reared paralarvae

The Octopus vulgaris farming is impaired by the high mortality of the paralarvae during the first month of life. Several factors have been investigated in this regard, but no data exist on the body surface mucus, which represents the interface with the outside environment. This study included morphometric analysis and glycoconjugates characterization of skin mucus in reared Octopus vulgaris par...

Dietary Effect on the Proteome of the Common Octopus (Octopus vulgaris) Paralarvae

Nowadays, the common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) culture is hampered by massive mortalities occurring during early life-cycle stages (paralarvae). Despite the causes of the high paralarvae mortality are not yet well-defined and understood, the nutritional stress caused by inadequate diets is pointed out as one of the main factors. In this study, the effects of diet on paralarvae is analyzed thro...

Multiple paternity in the common octopus Octopus vulgaris (Cuvier, 1797), as revealed by microsatellite DNA analysis

Two microsatellite DNA markers developed for the common octopus, Octopus vulgaris, were used to determine genotypes of four brooding female octopuses and 11 embryos sampled from their respective clutches, in order to confirm the multiple paternity hypothesis within this species. Two well-known reproductive behavioural patterns are apparently conflicting in mating outcome: the often-observed mul...
